Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tbsp olive oil, if needed
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 cup mushrooms, chopped (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 4–6 hamburger buns or hoagie rolls
  • 6–8 slices provolone cheese or shredded provolone

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until no longer pink. Drain excess grease if necessary.
  2. Cook the vegetables: Add the onion, green bell pepper, mushrooms, and garlic to the skillet. Cook for 5–7 minutes, until the vegetables are soft and lightly caramelized.
  3. Build the sauce: Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, and ketchup. Season with salt and black pepper. Simmer for 5–8 minutes, until the mixture thickens slightly and becomes saucy.
  4. Melt the cheese: Lay the provolone slices over the meat mixture. Cover the skillet and let the cheese melt for about 1–2 minutes. Stir gently if desired.
  5. Assemble and serve: Spoon the cheesy mixture onto toasted hamburger buns or hoagie rolls. Serve hot.
